Is your family experiencing conflict, hostilities or difficulties between family members? Maybe you are adjusting to life with a newborn or are going through toddlerhood. Perhaps your child has started a new school, or your teenage son or daughter is struggling with life. I offer online Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), which seeks to create a feeling of trust, mutual respect, and strong communication within families by addressing any negative patterns of behaviour.
When all family members feel emotionally secure in family discussions, everyone can discuss issues and disclose feelings. With each member feeling heard and validated, the family can work together to find solutions to problems and build individual relationships between all members. Families will emerge from EFFT sessions armed with the communication techniques necessary to maintain healthy interactions and develop positive relationships outside the family in the future.
The goal of Emotionally Focused Family Therapy is to create feelings of safety, respect and understanding, so together, you learn the skills necessary to form a secure, validating environment where parents, siblings, and children can comfortably communicate to solve problems that may come up in the family relationship.
For a while, you might feel like you are working hard and will probably feel exhausted during and after sessions. You can also expect to feel a sense of relief from new emotional experiences of connection and understanding with your family. As your family progresses in therapy, a new positive pattern of bonding, closeness, and understanding can emerge as relationships between members improve or begin to form. The family will create a stronger bond while processing issues together. Any deep wounds festering within the family can finally start to heal until everyone is comfortable and confident with their new skills.
Consider the interactions between members of your family. Are relationships within your family unit hostile or non-existent? Are there recurring issues in your home that seem impossible to solve? Does your family need help learning how to communicate with one another? Whether these questions describe your current situation, or you are simply looking for a way to create a deeper and more fulfilling connection within your family, EFFT therapy can help you reach your relationship goals.
We would meet for an initial assessment with all family members. I will establish if I can help and clarify the struggles between family members (for example, it could be a parenting couple or a sibling and a parent). Everyone will be asked about their therapy goals. EFFT is a relatively short-term process with an average of around 12 sessions, carried out weekly or fortnightly. Online sessions last 60-90 minutes.
